Those are some great looking bikes!
I want a Sportster to go with my Dyna, but I want to turn it into a dirt tracker. At the same time, I'd like to have a better touring bike for the wife to be comfortable too.

that mag has an automatic advance unit in side of it, and is prone to rusting and sticking in one spot / as a yearly service it would be in you interest to take it all apart with pictures and lube it on its moving pieces - it has two sets of weights and springs top and bottom of the can under the mag hat
**UPDATE** Bike is fixed! So we checked compression and spark. Both were fine. We pulled the air cleaner and noticed that there wasn't much fuel coming from the carb. Turns out there was some build up that caused the carb to clog. I'm not really sure how it actually caused the backfire, but the bike died from lack of fuel. The oil came out of the return, and somehow managed to not dirty up the air cleaner. Bike is running fine and no issues since! Credit to you all for the help! Really glad it was something so simple this time!
