In the other thread about repairing the frame of wifey's 96 FLHTCUI, I said that we thought we had a line on a donor frame to replace the rusted out sections near the swingarm mounts. Unfortunately the proposed donor was little better than what we have.
Any suggestions where to get a decent rear section of a frame? Doesn't need to have a VIN - it's going to get grafted into her frame that has a VIN. Don't care if the front end has been really crumpled - frame just needs to be good on the bottom from the cross-brace back to where the bottom tub joins the top tube.
I suspect a lot of people buy those frames for the VIN and title and don't care about the frame itself. I'd love to get a frame that has had the neck cut off...
I found a 2003 frame on ebay but they say it's compatible 2002-2006 only. I looked at my 2002 and it's definitely different from our 1996. Still, makes me wonder if it's too different to use. I know 1990-1996 are the same (in the area of concern) even though there's a part number change in 1993. Flipping through the parts fiches on Ronnie's website - the swingarm mount looks the same back to 1980. Hmmmm...
It might be and it might be further between the 'arms' of the swingarm but that doesn't matter for my purposes because I'm only concerned with the frame end.
Thanks for the craigslist suggestion. He has a partial frame that's just what I want. He's a thousand miles from me but there might be somebody passing that way. We'll see.
