Unhappy Shifting Woes

I have a 1996 Heritage and on occasion it is impossible to get it to shift to the next gear. Doesn't happen all the time and not every time in the same gear.
I have adjusted the clutch and cable according to the fsm and the problem still exist.
You can take off fine in 1st and after that it will either upshift like butter to the next gear or no matter how much pressure you apply (heel or toe) will not shift to next gear, let off the clutch then clutch again and it will usually shift to next gear, may have to repeat clutching a couple times then will shift thru the rest of the gears fine.
What puzzles me is that it doesn't happen in the same gear all the time and most of the time doesn't happen at all.
You guys have any idea what's going on here?

Linkage binding and/or needs adjustment. Check that first.

Something tells me you will find that the lock nuts have backed off the heim joints making the linkage unstable.
At least that's what happened to me one time.

Is it the original clutch? When my ‘97 started doing that, it was the spring plate in the clutch pack coming apart.

You never said what the mileage is and if it has the OEM clutch setup.......

Time to open it up and have a looksie......

One more thing a bad throw out bearing could also cause the same issues...

Yeah it's time to go through all the linkage and then clutch adjustment procedure, that doesn't do it time to open the primary and take look at the clutch components. Eliminate all that next suspect is going to be the shifting drum in the trans.
