I recently decided to put some cash into my bike and went with a new top end, ported and polished heads and a new valvetrain with a high lift cam, my other option would have been a new engine, my choice after some research was the S&S 111. Either way you can’t go wrong, good luck and enjoy what ever you choose.
S&S 124 is a good bit more money than the long block S&S 111. The 111 will last longer with less chance for "pinking predetonation" with pissy gas. Also the 124 is a stroker with even higher compression and more heat. Also the 111 is quite a monster in its own right. For me it was a nobrainer decision, 111 for dependability, longevity and very nice power. Did I mention 124 are pricy.
WOW, just checked prices at S&S. I got a deal a year ago. The prices have gone up, complete 124, $6300. The 111 complete engine, $6000. A year ago I got the "Long block 111", $ 4,300 plus ship was $4,400. If I did it over Id still get the 111, love this engine so far.
Thanks for all the reply’s guys. I have been looking at both the s&s 124 and 111.
I think the 111 may be be one to go for because I think it has enough power and I’d really like the thing to be reliable and last long enough that I could pass the hike on down to my son.
In the U.K I think I’m right in saying because my bike is from 1996 the emissions don’t get tested. I took it for its MOT a few months back before the engine died lol and they never tested the emissions then.
