Default Accessing FXR2 horn

The horn on my 99 FXR2 is intermittent. Sometimes it works, sometime it only buzzes. I need to replace it. What I’ve read it’s located under the battery, and the rear wheel needs to come off to access it. The service manual says nothing about rear wheel removal, just remove the battery and access the bolt via an access port under it.

Anyone done this? Thanks.

Note: Please, no “what do you need a horn for” there are plenty of times a horn comes in handy around here. Not to avoid collisions, but more to wake up sleeping cages sitting at green lights, etc. Things like that. Thanks.

If that FXR2 has the same Horn as the earlier ones... PITA, and if yers works at all.. it is one of the Few!!
I believe that if you come from the Top, and have long arms.. you can indeed remove the Battery box for access..
Alot of folks simply gave in and mounted a real H-D horn [I hate the sound of the original FXR horn] on the frame down tube.. like the SuperGlide is..
1 Frame Clamp and off we go!!!

If you remove the motor from the gear reduction starter you can get the horn out without removing the tire & fender, You don't need to remove the whole starter, just the motor.

No way my stupid meathook hands are fitting in there to get at the horn. So I called my dealer and the service writer who really likes my FXR said he’d get it done for .5 hours, so $55. I’d pay the $55 just so I wouldn’t have to sweat myself to dehydration in this miserable heat we’re in, so that was an easy decision. Getting it done Thursday morning. Nice.
