I also posted this in the Exhaust System Topics section, but thought the fellow EVO people in this section might have an idea or recommendation.
Earlier this week a friend of mine stopped by with his 1996 FLHT (Electra Glide Standard) to have both his tires swapped out. We were very careful removing the right rear muffler, but it seems as though he now has a slight crack in the right rear exhaust pipe (65626-95). Can we just use JB Weld high heat epoxy on this or do we need to get this welded? When I re-attached the muffler, I used copper anti-seize on the connection. My friend wasn't sure if he used anti-seize in this area in the past.
As a repair I would weld it, however any touring system up to 2008 will fit ('07-'08 may have O2 bung holes) so I recommend they look out for a secondhand fresh set of pipes. Take a look in the HDF Classifieds.
It happens. Vibration causes stress, stress causes cracks. What can help prevent cracks is to be sure is that assembled parts are properly shimmed and supported to avoid prestressing them during assembly.
