This method is not necessary when just adjusting the belt tracking. And I don't recommend anyone to take apart their primary just to confirm proper tracking.
Hence my "no control over where the belt is on the rear pulley"
Pretty simple folks -(**Read the fine print first)
You make a tool to get the centers exact from swing arm to center of the rear of axle.
Both sides of course!
It should have tapered points on it to fit into the tapered holes.
Once that is correct your rear tire will now be centered. (the belt will be centered too)
Next, you align rear tire with front using the front motor mount and checking the vertical with top mount. (mag level vertical on rear disk)
the front, of course, will move rear tire left or right.
**None of this is worth a crap or valid without all good hemi bearings and bushings in excellent condition.
If you make the front wheel vertical ( mag levels on front and rear disk vertically )the rear will be level .)
a jack under the rear frame, jack up it uo a bit and remove rear shocks. your rear will be vertical. If not, you
need to rebuild the swing arm.
Thanks for all the good input guys.Since the old belt is prolly 21 yrs old, I just bought a new "S&S Gates-x3n carbon belt" for $180. I'm going to have my Indy go all the way thru everything making swing arm ect is in perfect set up and new condition. Iv already got an arm & leg in this $5k bike so no sweat. All the way From engine mounts to drive belt will be like new. Guess its cheaper than rebuilding a 56 chevy. Kinda of excited to get it all done.
Doing wheel alignments is like kissing your wife-
No one else should be doing it, but you !
Your indy will not ever take the time to get it as exact as you will.
If you can read a level and a tape it is well within your scope.
I was watching a supposed mechanic do a wheel alignment the other day.
It was for sure the shotgun approach and good enough for who it was for...

Yes , agreed and I don't trust 99% of the wrenches. My Indy does great work, he installed my New S&S 111 engine and a perfect job. I trust his 40 yrs of HD wrenching over my work. Yes Im meticulous but he does nothing but HD and hes certified. Iv tried to improve on some of his work only to go back to his orig plan. Even the local dealerships will tell you he is the best around. Ill double check everything when I get the bike back.
You need 3 mag levels, 2 with a good laser.
Some construction string , a plumb bob.
a way to hold the bike level.
As i have said B4 you are positively wasting your time if the swingarm is not in 100% great shape.
If the bushings in these are over 5 years old they are sagging hog shet.

The swing arm at some point was changed out to a chrome HD swing arm but before I owned the bike. Thats one reason I want my Indy to go thru and rebuild everything.
