Hello all,was chasing down a strange noise coming from primary area.Pulled cover, clutch ok, replaced orig. chain w/new,checked compensator tight and looked ok,put back together rode about 2k more miles, then went to check belt tension, and discovered clanking at the pulley, pulled inner pri. and saw locking plate slinging on shaft and screws sheared off.Pulley still intact but when I removed it ,it looked like it jumped the shaft Anyone else have this happen? Btw, big nut was tight and I don't dog the bike, spline still looks good .
Thanks for any input 86 FLT w/70 k
Reading that link I see I am joined by many,This pulley will be #3 for me. First 2 were the Harley upgraded. I ordered a 33 tooth by Andrews, I guess time will tell?
I pulled my inner primary off recently to get my motor out for a rebuild. My lockplate was tight but the inner race on the mainshaft had walked out some. The big nut was tight as well. The quad seal was shot and the 5th gear mainshaft seal was bad too.
The strange thing was the noise would appear out of nowhere always while coming to a stop which makes sense now, sometimes a squeal or a scraping sound.
if you're going thru that many pulleys you might want to check the main gear splines that the pulley fits on. if the splines have a worn area that you can feel with your finger nail you should replace the main gear too. my 85 had the main gear splines worn from a sloppy fit with the pulley and i couldn't get the trans to stop leaking because of it. it doesn't take long to destroy the pulley splines if the main gear splines are shot.

Yes ,my thoughts too.Does appear to be in good shape I'll know for sure when the pulley comes in and can check for any play,
You need to red loctite the main nut retainer screws (I believe they are 1/4x20 socket button head). I would also be checking both the 5th gear and trap door bearings. After 3 times I would think there might be a little excessive vibration going on there..
