Default Evo oil level

Need some guidance on oil levels for a 93 Evo. I got it back from an Indy shop and boy did they do a terrible job. I'm not getting a ton of blow by or anything, but the oil level seems really high to me. When up to temp it is maybe 1/2 inch from the top of the tank. I'm surprised it's not blowing the cap off. I have an aftermarket HD dipstick that has one marking on it, which is a recessed ring about 1 inch from the end of the stick. Maybe the shop checked the level while the scoot was cold and over filled? Where on the stick should the oil read?

Stand the bike up straight, the oil level should be about an inch and a half below the bottom of the filler neck.

Why would you take your bike to any shop?

The person who taught me about Harleys told me to fill the oil tank to just below the filler neck (2.5 quarts) and I have been doing that for over 10 years with no problems.

There are several reasons people take their bikes to shops.
No room to do the work, no tools, no time to do the work, no mechanical ability, the list goes on but you get the point.

Let`s let that one die right here, this is not a real biker thread.

The guy asked a legitimate question, and it was answered.

Thank you for the helpful advice, I will be removing a half quart. As for taking the scoot to the shop... I was in the middle of replacing an axle shaft, bearings and seals on my truck. I did not have the time or space to accommodate both. I also have a 18 month old which limits my time in the garage. I am not stranger to wrenching and really appreciate the sound advice.

Dude you don't have to explain to anyone why you decided to take your bike to a shop!!!!!!!!!
It's your bike you do what you want with it!!!!!!!

Should the oil be checked hot or cold, or doesn't it matter as long as the bike is straight up and not on the Jiffy Stand. I have a 1992 Fat Boy.

I like checking it hot, just so you can be sure any oil that might have sumped into the cases is pumped back into the tank first.
