Howdy all. I have a 1987 Tour Glide with about 18,000 miles. Mostly stock except cams and carb. At least that is what the PO told me. Had it for about a year now and so far it has been a great ride. I have a 30" inseam (on a good day) and have been thinking about putting in a reverse gear so it will be easier to get out of parking places, garage, etc.I know that I can lower the bike somewhat, but the idea of a reverse gear intrigues me. I'd like to solicit your thoughts on any pluses and minuses. I am a fair wrench and will be doing a 10,000 mile service on it this winter anyway.
Ya don't need no reverse - just push it from alongside. Leg length doesn't matter then! I've only ever been able to paddle a bike from the saddle on a few of my many bikes.
Good ole BFB!!!
Tho that was awhile ago... he ain't really Changed none... Look for him Competing at Bowling Green, KY in two weeks...
If we would have bought the Harley Hack, we would Have that...
First of all, that’s a really nice looking bike. I like those much better than the road glide that replaced it.
Regarding reverse,I have always been if the mindset of planning my parking so I can leave easily and without backing up. If there is no choice but to backup, I park in a way that gravity helps me instead of working against me.
I am 5’ 9”. My pants size is 29” inseam. To the ground, probably 30”
A narrower seat will help, especially if it is narrow towards the front. Boots with thicker soles could also help.
If going with a reverse, Baker would be the way to go. None of Baker’s products are cheap, but then again, the best rarely is cheap.
Perhaps another option would be an air adjustable suspension that you could lower when you need to back up and raise when you are ready to ride. I don’t like the complexity of air suspensions though.
