Stator woes
When I get a personal Evo (or cone Shovel, both are quite old today) I replace the whole system with a kit as old magnet glue can fail and while most magnets just shift sideways inside the rotor (Inspect the distance between magnets, it will usually be obvious!) they can move into conflict with the stator destroying it and spraying fragments into the primary. Evos are great bikes but they are OLD bikes. BTW bad batteries can easily kill charging systems by drawing too many amps. I use a cheap automotive load tester but you can take yours to any decent auto parts store if you like as they load test batteries all the time.
The Cycle Electric page has lots of charging system and part selection info. Spend some time there. On bikes where customer won't or can't spring for a rotor I replace at least the stator and regulator. Regulator malfunctions can damage stators.
