I played with a 5 speed kicker many years ago. I learned to hate it. I didn't run it long.
The ignition I used was a Crane in the cone. What a FKN POS. Crane knew they shut down when hot which I didn't find cute since I live in Arizona. You'll need a good ignition that has a kick option.
The York kick kit is junk. The Billet Bilt is built like a tank. I have no experience with anything else.
I have a box of parts with zero sentimental value.
I bought a new FX1200 shovel with kick-start only (I was young!) and the bushings for the kick-starter came adrift after a few years, so even the H-D kickers had problems.
That's pretty much all there is to it, although once you've got it dialed in, you shouldn't need more than a few kicks.
That's not my experience - with a new kicker-only Harley! The tank soon acquired a dent from a clenched fist.....
If you intend to ditch the starter, I'd recommend not doing so until after you've got your new ignition dialed in. Way, way easier to verify that the bike will run if you can test the ignition using the starter.
I know that feeling! Especially before I came to realise that nosey passers-by would twist the throttle, just because, hence flooding the darned thing.....
