I did the aftermarket (Custom Chrome I think) kicker on my '91 Softail. Installation was straightforward... worked ok. Can't speak to longevity as i sold the bike shortly after completion. As noted in another post your choice of pipes will be limited to clear the kick arm, or you can do what I did & get an extended offset arm. One warning.... the whole thing eats up some legroom.... it will make you bowlegged on one side

Only kicker I ever owned was an RZ350
eventuLly carb issues made starts a PITA
Still fantasize about kick starting a bike. These look best on rigids IMO

Or you do what most us old shovel guys do and fold it out when riding. Solid arm on mine but the brass pedal vibrates out within a couple miles without fail otherwise it's in the back of the knee.

If the kicker is to look cool and play "biker" buy a cheap kit and don't use it more than enough for manly starts in front of hot babes (or do a "Bronson" start and hit the electric start button when your begin your kick). Evo electric starting systems (especially the later Denso units vs. the early Hitachi) are excellent so there's no functional need for a kicker.

If it's for daily use, buy a Baker. My Custom Crap kit ratchet stripped and did very unpleasant things to my knee. I replaced the ratchet and gears with a Baker four speed set solving that problem and threw the soft stock arm and pedal in the trash replacing them with Baker and later a stock folding Harley arm for comfort because I run mid controls. The Baker arm went to one of my Shovels. Baker make VERY NICE parts. Even my jaded pro machinist bros enjoy fondling them! That came in under Baker cost but I'll never try to cut that corner on critical parts again. The case sticks out annoyingly if you run mid controls which I do. I didn't transfer the kit to my upgraded trans. It was a waste of time but educational. I also upgraded the throwout bearing, and did migrate that to my later transmission. https://bakerdrivetrain.com/products...ut-bearing-kit

After my knee got better I kicked myself in the azz for cheaping out. If it had taken longer to heal I'd have paid a friend to kick me in the azz for cheaping out. Don't cheap out on parts which can hurt you. I grew up kicking and continue to kick Britbikes, HDs and older Japanese machines. It wasn't operator error.
