Default oil change on 86 FLST

So.. about to do the oil change on an 1986 FLST and can't find the drain on the tank... there is a pipe that is clipped to theframe below the tank.... is the one to use to drain the tank?

If it is on the right side of the frame then yes that is the tube as my '95 has the drain tube there.
It should have a strange plug in the end of the hose.

I was expecting to find a plug as some Youtube videos had shown that on later softies but mine appears to actually attach to the frame, as though that is the plug? is this unique to the 86? If this is the case it's going to be tricky to not get oil every where when it's pulled off. I'm sure I must be missing something here!

Take a look at Ronnies H-D microfiche website where you can see a diagram showing which hose is the drain.

When I change my oil I pull the hose back a bit from the left side and point it into the drain pan then pull the plug.
Got a picture of what you have?

Your oil drain hose clamps to a plug on the frame, loosen the clamp and pull the hose off.

Pinch the hose just above clamp with a pair of needle nose vise grips (not too tight, just enough to restrict flow), loosen clamp and direct hose to drain pan, release vise grips. Cleanup should be minimal.

From an almost stock 1988 FLSTC

frame plug for oil line

...and for good measure, the transmission drain plug

Ronnie's shows no hose on an 86...just a drain plug on the tank...that is the way my 84 is...

I use an oil radiator hose to direct the oil to the pan...

That diagram covers several model years. Part #27 is the drain hose used on the 86.
