I took a job for the National Science Foundation as the Facilities Engineer at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station last October and have been here ever since. Covid wasn't even a buzz word at that time. My deployment will end this November and I'll head home but to be honest, I'm kinda nervous about it. Due to Covid mostly, but since I've been isolated since February 15th my immune system is very suppressed. I'm sure I'll get sick, but I really hope I don't catch this ****. Sure there's a statistical chance I'll live through it but I'm also hearing about long term effects that rather not have to deal with.
Oh, and last week it finally got down to -100.8F. Today's not bad though (-75F). In about a week or so we should start seeing the first sliver of the sun on the horizon.
That's a tad on the nippy side, fer sure. M1 Garands worked at 40 below in Korea if you removed all the oil/grease. They were they only weapon system that did, I have read. I wonder how they would do at a buck under.
As for the Chinese Virus, don't worry too much about it. What you read or see in the media is mostly political spin. Oh, it's there, and it can be anything from "I didn't know I was infected" to "dead." But in a sub 50 year old healthy person, chances of dying from it approach zero. So, don't sweat it.
Is it cold down there? Are you just trying to escape the Hunan Virus? Hiding out?
I like stainless fasteners too, but a couple of points: Stainless is not stronger than a standard grade 5 bolt. Actually a bit weaker, if I recall. If you run it into aluminum, be sure to use an anti-seize or anti-corrosion compound. Galvanic action blah blah.
I'm going to say I use anti-seize if the bolt and nut are stainless to avoid galling.
I use blue Loctite with most fasteners including stainless into aluminum and not had a problem with corrosion.
Of course, blue Loctite and anti-seize are not used together. On a stainless bolt & nut combination I gotta pick one or the other...depends upon the application.
I have noticed that I haven't had a galling problem with stainless to stainless fasteners if I use the blue Loctite...at least not yet.
DoDo you recall your spacing at the adaptor?
Any pictures from the front or back showing the mounting?
Haven't tried it yet, but someone in a FB post told me they used a .180" spacer at the adaptor to center the caliper at the rotor.
Harley part #6019 for the spacer.
I'll give it a shot soon and confirm that spacing works for anyone doing this on a 99-earlier 39mm with cast timkin wheels!
Takes a different adapter for the pre 2K frontends depending on the calipers you want to run.
PS another thing nobody has mentioned doing the later years parts swap with pre 99 wheels is you use the later legs with the bigger axle and early wheels you need to either have the larger axle turned down to fit the 3/4" bearings or make bushing adapters to fit the early axles to the legs. I've gone both ways, turning the bigger axle is the easiest.
