Looking at getting 14" - 18" apes to replace my stock bars on an 87 flhs. From what I can find the only real difference for year changes is that the plug size for electrical connections have changed and that what the year reference is for. So has anyone here put new stlye bars on the older style bike?

 

Not sure what you mean by newer style but I put 16" bars on both of my bikes.
Had to extend the wires but that was just some solder, heat shrink and time.
Well not to mention having to get longer cables and brake line.

 

Yep.

When I did mine on my '90, I just soldered in extensions to the stock wiring. Bought a pack of multi-color wire spools that allowed me to retain the stock color coding. That also gave me the opportunity to run the wires internal to the bars, which is nice.

For the clutch cable, I took the opportunity to upgrade to Barnett. Highly recommended.

For the brake, I indulged in a complete set of Russell lines, including the spider/splitter thing that mounts under the triple tree. Very nice stuff.

 

Newer style as bar that are listed for 09 newer, I wasnt 100% sure if there was really any difference other then the wire holes. The extensions I'm not worried about, that comes with the territory of changing.

 

Thanks for the references, I was thinking of going with Barnett. I have seen a lot of people going that way. I'll have to look into the Russell brake lines.

 

Can't go wrong with Barnett cables.

 

The bars on Ester were late model fly-by-wire bars.....no issues. In fact most everything I did to her was later model stuff that wasn't supposed to fit.
