Default New setup problems, help please!

Hey gents, going to make this as short and sweet as possible, gotta work in a few hours, but there's a lot going on here. So, this is my fourth season with the bike. Up to the end of last season, mods were as follows: slip on mufflers with packing removed. Big sucker air cleaner with stock cover. Carb cleaned up, 48 pilot, 180 main. Save for the occasional hiccup, bike has started ran and rode without issue. Over the winter I did:Cobra dual head pipes (turns out my stock pipes had a crack, could have been my decell popping...) inner cam bearing, ev13 cam, johnson lifters, new oem breather gear and dyna plug and play ignition. Again, trying to keep this short, but.... bike starts and rides with no issue. Very well behaved, no popping or snorting of any sort. Ignition is dialed in with voes on and second most agressive advance curve, per the instructions. I also put a new cam sensor in, and setting static timing with the dyna is a breeze. The only other change I made was to drop the n65 needle in the carb along with a new slide from cv performance, I happened to have the needle kicking around and wanted to give it a whirl. At any rate, the results are not what I had hoped. Same power, if not less, than last year. Low end power is abysmal. Over 3k it starts to come on and will definitely rev past the 4800 where it used to fall off, but roll on power under even 4k is just not there. And the sound, It just doesn't sound right. To be honest, my dad had an early yamaha royal star boulevard with the de-tuned vmax engine and 4 drag pipes. It was pretty damn cool for what it was, but I digress....my bike now sounds very similar to that 4 drag pipe yamaha. I could chalk up the different sound to the true dual headpipes, and I expected a little loss in low end with them, but from all that I've read, this thing should rip pretty good for what it is and it just doesn't. The final nail in the coffin, some blue smoke from the rear jug muffler. I remember a bit from years past, but with the factory head pipe system, who knows. now I know its the rear jug. So at the moment, rocker covers are off, everything looks perfect. Maybe a burned valve? I can give more pics and details tomorrow, just gotta get some rest at the moment. Thanks for any input, you fellas are the best! Oh yeah, I dropped factory ignition back in, just to eliminate that variable, same identical result.

See, I had the same problem - I found that the instructions for the timing to be...lacking.
They told me use Curve #4 (least advanced) for a highly modified engine (which I fit as a Stage IV). I ended up having to use curve #1 (most advanced) otherwise it lacked power entirely and sounded like a chugging train at higher RPM's.
Be aware that could be a problem.

You will need to tune your engine for the new cam, intake and exhaust. For carbs this typically means upping jet sizes and getting it done correctly for you to get your power back. I sincerely doubt stock setup has run it hot enough to burn a valve - and yes the rear should run a tad richer, so a slight bit of blue smoke isn't a bad thing.
Get to tuning and get that awesome ignition back in.

Ok, reading that gives me some relief and I am more than happy to keep tuning. The only actual airflow mod this time around was the head pipes. I suppose they could have thrown things off a bit. Just seems that such a mild cam and overall mild setup should at least be in the ballpark with the 48 and 180. My buddy has a 190 from his Twinkie that I can try.

If it ran good before with the other needle, I suggest putting back in.. Sounds like your getting too much fuel on the low end.... Also Curve 2 would be best for your setup....

Going back to the stock needle after work today. Not sure if it's over fueling. Adding a pic of the plugs after about 50 miles mixed riding.

Blue smoke is indicative of burning oil. Black smoke would be indicative of too much fuel. Do a leak down test on the motor. The spark plugs don't look too bad, top picture shows the ground electrode eroded.

Sincerest apologies for the grammatical trainwreck, I'll try and do better.

Going to tinker with jets tonight and try for another test ride in between the raindrops.

Stock is 42/170..
A 45/175 or 45/180 should be purrrrfect for your setup..
No apologies necessary, just find it a little humorous is all....

Like "ok, I'm gonna try keep this as shorts as possible" "for my next Thesis:.... Lol..

"Laughter is the best medicine"... "Next to a nice cold one"...
