grbrown - I guess my issue with the current filter location was the mount coming loose and allowing the filter to flop. I remember tightening it up a couple years ago and it being a total PITA to reach. Is there a mod to fix this?
My filter also came loose and you are quite right, it is indeed a PITA to sort out - but we only have to do that once, as a little blue Loctite on the screw/nut has kept mine fine for many years. I suppose red Loctite would be better, but I never thought of that at the time! We have two later bikes with front mounted filters, which are a different PITA at every filter change, keeping old oil off things. I suspect someone will now chip in with a solution for that!
Been working more than usual so the old girl has been on the back burner. Everything is apart, just have one stubborn floorboard support that seems to have rusted the bolt solid. Trying a little PB/impact to get it loose.
Anyway, I'm looking at updating the swingarm while I'm in here. What is an upgrade? I don't need wider if it isn't an improvement. I am looking at the Custom Cycle Swingarm RetroFit Kit on Amazon and wondering if its claims of improved handling are legit.
I haven't used that kit, but have used other Custom Cycle Engineering stuff. It's worth checking their own website to check them out. When I swapped my s/a to a 2007 one I used a True-Track conversion kit to install it, although I don't believe they still offer it.
I did a CCE kit on Ester, my 89 FLHS, the difference in handling was dramatic. But then everything in the factory swingarm was completely worn out before to upgrade.

My 91 FXR has a left hand bolt that holds that filter housing in place. I can't remember how I know this but that left thread keeps the bolt from coming loose. You can upgrade that part with a newer left one, it drops in.
I never use Red Loctite unless the service manual specs it. Blue Loctite is what I have used on that left bolt.
Never been a fan of that front filter location, it's just a mess. The under tranny filter is as easy as it gets.
The filter is easy. I punch 2 holes in the filter (top & bottom) and catch the oil in a gallon plastic bag. When its drained empty I slide to bag on good and pop off the filter using a big set of channel locks and let it drop also into that gallon bag. Zip the bag up and done. Usually I don't spill any oil.
If you decide to go for LED lightning, make sure you are buying good quality stuff. I did one conversion with some cheap chinese LEDs and they started blinking after one month or so.
