Well, mileage will take it's toll on wearable things....so it is that while out riding I lost the ability to shift! I found second gear luckily and was able to putt home. What I found is that the cross arm splines are worn out on the inside end from possibly being too loose. Luckily I have a new crossarm, but I know putting it in will be a small nightmare for the shifter and bellcrank screws are as tight as Dick's hatband! Oh well....I loosen them some way....at least I already have the needed part!
A 4 inch Harbor freight cutoff tool is a marvelous machine.......Just enough room to work that puppy in and cut that crossarm apart. The pinch nuts were well stuck so had to do this to get to them without boogering them up. New crossarm now in, and looking over the rest of the shifter stuff, I just might renew it all.....
Have same problem with my outside heel shifter arm. Tight as hell, but won't tighten solid. Assume it's shifter arm as shaft splines are fine. Don,'t use it , may move toe shifter to outside and turn a spacer for the shaft to take up the slack. Luckily both arms can be removed with some grunt. Glad it worked out for you.
Ive gone ahead and ordered a new front lever and a link rod too.....and I am gonna replace those Allen head pinch bolts with hex heads. For some reason in the hundred or so Allen keys I have not one will properly fit Harley fittings. Good luck with yours *** theres more than one way to skin a cat!
Welp....I visited the hardware and found that the hex head possibilities have what seems to be way too big a head....at least for the inside lever....they may work on the heel/toe shifter arms.....but I got some, AND some new socket heads, verifying that these do have heads for which I have a key! Between the two I'll be cooking with gas......
