Default Primary Drain Plug "Upgrade"

My primary drain plug has always given me hell. I have tried thread sealant and pipe tape and I still get drips out of the plug. Is there a kit or plug available to convert it to a plug with O ring or is there an oversized plug available to replace the one I have? Pretty sure it's been threaded in way to far a time or two and doesn't seat properly.

The iron clad solution is pull the pan and put a new Timesert in, then use the OEM plug that has a grove for an -013 o-ring.

The ghetto solution is not an oring, because you'd just smash it, but either teflon tape on the threads (the thick stuff), or a fiber or nylon washer that's designed to be a sealing washer. The teflon tape works great on my primary plug. I just cut it in half lengthwise about 2" long so there's not a bunch sticking out around the plug.

Had the same problem on my 1996 Electra Glide … I pulled the primary, drilled and tapped the hole for 7/16 UNF (fine thread) … purchased a stainless socket head cap screw, shortened it and put an O-Ring under the head … I can still use a LITTLE Teflon tape if I want … no more drips

Primary is not as bad as it looks ... you are seeing the reflection from the paint on the floor

You should be careful with teflon TAPE, because pieces could get into the system. You should use pipe dope (liquid sealant) instead.

Liquid sealant has never worked for me at least using the loctite stuff. Leaks instantly. Pipe tape worked until I rode it and then parked it and it started dripping.

Have not had problems with a little tape, one time around the threads … besides it is a closed system

The primary cover is threaded for tapered pipe thread, if you put too much torque on the plug, it will crack the case.

If the case is in good condition, there is no reason that the plug would not seal, with a little teflon tape.

That liquid pipe thread sealant sucks...

There is nothing in the primary that a piece of Teflon tape could hurt

There are multitudes of different liquid pipe thread sealants...some suck...some are badass...

Some can be put in service intermediately... many have cure times...

Some of the 6000 psi stuff for hydraulics absolutely will not leak...

My 1996 Ultra Classic's drain plug on the primary would screw all the way though and fall into the primary. I did not want to spend the money for a new cover, so after 5 years of putting up with the drip, I plugged the hole, it doesn't leak a drop, but when I have to remove the primary cover, I remove the chain adjuster cover and take about 3 feet of 1/4" hose and siphon most of the oil out and then take a towel and lay it under the primary then remove the cover. My Norton did not have a drain plug.

If you get one of these then you won't need a towel any more.

It will catch all the oil your inner primary drips out when you pull off the outer primary.
