Default ‘97 FLHR idle cable spring install

I replaced the idle cable some months back... while removing the old cable the spring went “ping”, never to be found again. How it wasn’t wound around the inner cable I don’t know!

I picked up a replacement spring from a dealer.
This springs diameter is too large to fit in the cable guide and too small to go over the cable ferrule!!!

I can understand the ferrule part, but not cable guide.

What am I missing?

Every idle cable I've ever bought came with the spring on it.
I've never tried to replace it or buy it separate.
Hell I didn't know you could!!!!!!

Yeah, I’ve never had a throttle or idle cable with a ferrule on the end either!
I guess I’ll just reassemble without a spring, the ferrule is almost a pressure fit in the cable guide.

Either that or just buy a new idle cable or depending on age replace both cables.
I like Barnett.

Not a bad idea to just replace both cables. I installed a Barnett clutch cable last fall, one of those coated jimmies... made a believer out of me, don’t think I’ll buy anything other than Barnett cables going forward.

I know I won't unless it's an emergency like I broke a cable on a trip then I'd buy any damn thing I could find but I would replace it with a Barnett as soon as I got home.

To get the spring on, you need to start it on the cable at one end of spring. Then twist/ screw the spring till its on, all the way, over the cable.

Why would he want to put that spring on the cable if it won't fit into the cable guide???

Just for fun I looked this thing up. I'm assuming you have a carb and not FI. Here's a link to the spring. It's part of F/N 11, idle cable assy.

http://partsfinder.onlinemicrofiche....=35&c=0&d=1997 FLHR ROAD KING® (CARBURATED) (FD) THROTTLE CONTROL ASSEMBLY W/ GRIPS

I don't see a separate P/N. I'll take a guess and say you've been sold the wrong spring.
