Default Primary drain plug

I have a -92 FXSTC.
Which size of allen key should be used for removing the primary drain plug?
I've tried 7/32, 3/16, 5/32 and 5 and 4 mm and none of them work...

I believe that is a Torx head on that plug. T-27 I believe.

It's either a T35 or T40 I don't remember which off the top of my head.
I'd lean more to the T35.

According to the book:
101 Harley-Davidson Performance Projects For Evolution Big Twins And Sportsters
by Kenna Love and Kip Woodring
Copyright: 1998
MBI Publishing Company

This is the infamous #739A drain plug. It's used for both the tranny drain and the primary drain on most Big Twins, and it's been through a couple of changes over the years. The early plug has an Allen head, and frankly, the magnetic tip had a tendency to come loose, sometimes falling into the motor. Second, the plug is a fine thread going into aluminum, therefore, a prime candidate for getting stuck in its hole or stripping out. It's a fine plan to have at least one new one of these on hand during fluid changes. The latest version is a Torx head, with a secure magnet and Teflon on the threads so finger tight and half a twist will keep it secure and hassle free.

3/16" Allen wrench for early model drain plugs
T-40 Torx wrench, for late model drain plugs

FYI: According to the notes in my shop manual, it's a T-40.

But, then there is this information:

The plug part number is 739A which is used on a shitload of primarys.
(All the EVO ones I looked at) and it is actually a T-30 Torx head.

Don't get me wrong you can easily take it out with an allen but it is actually a torx.

Never thought it would be a Torx after looking at it.
But yes, it was a stripped T30 one there.
Any suggestions on how to remove one of those?

You could try hammering in a larger allen head either metric or standard using a ratchet.

Get a t-45 torx bit and grind it down to a point. In other words, grind a slight taper in the tip of the bit so it is smaller than the rest of it, and tap it in carefully with a small hammer. Attempt to get a good bite and try to back it off. YD

I had a stripped Torx that I couldn't get out. I was able to hammer in a larger Torx and got it out. I've also used a flat chisel and hammer a slot for a flat screwdriver.

Your primary plug and transmission plug are interchangeable.
