Yes if you have a cracked case typically behind the main bearing unfortunately a little to common in the early evo years

It's more likely a bad crank seal than a cracked case.

but not on the m8’s... That one I personally believe is related to the hydraulics in the clutch system. Of which I’m sure a solid fix has yet to be developed. Sad. Because the motor looks so good from the outside

A few things could cause it. A motor with a lot of miles and worn compression rings creating a little too much blow by to the case can push oil out the seal and fill the primary, especially if your breather system is not working properly. What year we talking here? Bottom or top breather?

Seeing as how this is the EVO forum not really sure what the problems with an m8 have to do with anything.
That said I think what you are referring to is migration of transmission fluid to the primary and the OP is saying he's getting motor oil into the primary.

Bolt mounting the stator is loose or fell out.

There are two screws that hold a plastic clip type thingy, they keep the stator wires away from the rotor, MoCo recommends loctite on those screws to seal them up as the bore of the screw hole goes thru...my money is on the bad seal previously mentioned (unless recent stator work has been done). I had the jugs bored to 36 over and higher compression pistons. Never ran better but the clutch was acting up and when I pulled the cover to check the adjustment there was at least two quarts too much oil. It may be a breather problem because I do see a lot of oil in the air filter.
