but with plugs removed, you can put them back in the boots and lay them on metal where ever is convenient.
There is a big slotted cap looking thing at the top of the oil pump. When you unscrew it there is a ball and spring underneath. You can put a little oil in there to prime the pump.

Pretty sure if you remove that plug on a Softail with oil in the tank, you gonna have a mess to clean up.
That personally is what I would do. I have lost count of all the rebuilds I have done and I have yet to not see or fill an oil film on engines I have pulled apart.
