I remember working at a Chrysler dealership when they first can out with FI, man a cold start rattle was inevitable.... Especially the 2.6 ltr timing chains....

Thank you all for the replies. When prepping my Softail for winter I drain the oil because in the months of sitting idle the crankcase ends up with way more oil than the scavenge pump can handle. The fuel tank is topped off and has Stabil in it. I like to prime the engine, especially the valve train, prior to starting following storage. Engine manufacturers say that 50% of engine wear takes place in the first couple of minutes after starting. Given their druthers they would incorporate a slight delay between hitting the starter and ignition but they know they would have nothing but complaints from owners. I suspect the "Just start it" crowd are right though.

Don't believe anyone, You can crank without the plugs anytime you want. Just remember to hold the ends of the plug wires with one hand as you are cranking the engine so the spark don't go into the spark plug hole.

I've just always left the kill switch off and spun it till the oil light goes out. Rest for a minute or so and start it.

that is how long?, five seconds?
Forgot why some do this? My lithium battery recommends this on cold starts to warm it
up
But we’re talking about lube here... Correct? And for what specific area?

Never had a lithium battery. What are you saying they recommend you do when cold?

The procedure is to hit it with a short load to wake it up, wait a minute or so, then fire.

huh? Mine won’t spin unless the ignition switch is on and the kill switch is in the run position.

The chemical reaction which causes internal heating is what shortens the life of lithium batteries.

My keyless bike cannot be cranked in a way that the engine won't try to start.
