What I would do though while you got it all apart I'd mock up each cylinder back onto the block and see where your piston sit's in the cylinders maybe we can figure out why there was two gaskets but do it with nothing no gaskets put the cylinders back on and measure how far your pistons are in the hole, or possibly even above the cylinder deck.. If you take four pieces of 3/4-in PVC pipe 1-in long put them on the studs and then use the head bolts torque the cylinder down to get an accurate reading of the piston in the hole. 10 - 15 foot lbs should do it..

That's when we found the two gaskets on each base. couldn't think of why he would of done that but figured I'd ask here and see if anyone had any ideas.

I will mock it up to check the deck height/clearance and see if that was a concern... but hell, maybe he had seeping before and thought this would be good insurance against it? FIIK!
And... Why are we opposed to Claying the F****in Thing???
Gee Wizz... That Internet pictutre sure looks Stock to me!!!!! Geeeze

The bottoms of the cylinders may have been machined,
setting deck height is for getting the squish correct, not valve clearance.

And you would put a Cam in without Clay???
I guarantee that with "non-OE" Parts I can get good Squish and still Biff the Valves!!!

Only on a Known Stock Engine would I even consider a cam change, let alone a Deck Adjustment

Various points at the Valve heads and Piston to Head get a small ball of Clay.. Proper tools are required to check piston to Valve clearance... but Must be done IMO especially with an Engine that has Pushed out a Valve Guide!!!!
Good Job for a Seasoned Indy!!!!

Why haven't you contacted the seller you bought it from to ask him some of these questions? WHY did he tear it down? It wasn't just to put a cam in, unless he needed more clearance. Were you planning on just bolting it all back together? Too many unknowns here. You need to closely check everything (top end, and bottom) on this before you assemble. It is a lot easier to do now, than find out the hard way!

maybe he had a oil leak, the base of the jugs does get warped at the centers,i had to "plane" mine down so they were flat again, no more oil leak.
