Do yur own it's very simple, wipe w dykem n scribe 2 lines at the keyway on the factory cam. Press off the factory gear n take the new cam align the marks to the keyway n press it on.....done.
Great tip, just a plain old permanent marker will work if you don't have dykem...
Damn dude you really love your caliper don't you???
The EVO motor isn't a modern day motor with very tight tolerances it's early 80's tractor technology.
Don't overcomplicate it....
Two pins is the correct way to measure a gear-wheel - it relates to the pitch circle I referred to above. Even easier to swap to the stock gear, as so many of us have suggested, which avoids the need to measure!
I am jumping in late here, but I agree with all that have suggested to swap the stock gear. This is the best thing to do all around for the engine, good luck.
Everyone here that knows me knows how many cams and builds I've had. I never swapped the gear and never had an issues... And yes you need the pins to properly measure the cam gear....

All of the most useful threads on this subject have the same forum folk patiently giving the same experienced advice to anyone hungry enough to learn it.
Wish I could buy you all a round of suds.
I am holding my EV13 in hand now contemplating the gear swap or no. gotta wait till tomorrow for a shim so started the search again for info.
"Not that it'll change my decision, but I ended up using two 7/64" drill bits (which measure 0.108" each...how lucky is that?) and repeated the measurement. The EV13 measured 2.750". The old cam measured 2.743",
If anyone lands on this, my 1998 RKClassic EFI stock cam seemed to mimic this result, but I had my pin one tooth off. After than the stock Cam was 2.750 and the EV13 was 2.749. Looks like plug n play in this case!
