Default cam swap question

Do I need to worry about matching cam and pinion gear sets for a cam swap on a 96 roadking? According to the service manual there are 7 different cam and pinion gears marked with a specific color dot. Can I just install an ev27 and not worry about it? Yes I have a new torrington bearing.........I've read all those posts!!

You do need to make sure the cam gear is the right one for the pinion gear or else it will either whine, or clatter. You can take the gear off of your old stock cam and get it pressed on the new cam. That will work just fine. You will also need a shim for the new cam. I think most use .050" or so as they are that much shorter than the original.

Swap the gear wheel is simplest, so you carry on running the gear currently in your bike. You will need to install the cam to measure end float, then get the correct shim to set end float.
