Default Cam & Crank Gears won't Quite line up

Can anyone offer their experience as to where my alignment trouble may be?

I am installing cam gears in my '05 Ultra. Everything instlled and seated without a hitch. New bearings (inner and cam plate) pressed the gears on each cam...

After installing the Cam Plate per the manual, then installing the outer gears (Cam and Crank), the cam gear seems to need to be seated an extra 3/32" inboard or so. I can't in good faith just start it up. The smaller or crank gear seems to be seated fully. I just can't figure it out. I will have to spend a bit more time on. Worst case scenario is to pull the cam plate, and ensure everything is seated correctly.

The thing that stands out in my mind is where the aft HQ-0034 cam end meets with the large outer cam gear. I would expect the gear and cam to meet fully flush. The gear does not meet flush with the cam end, and that, I am assuming is my trouble.

I woke up this morning thinking, maybe I did not install one of the spacers involved withthe oil pump. I will have to check.

Anyone had this trouble and can offer their thoughts...

I think you are right about the gear. The cam and gear should be flush if I remember correctly. It has been a couple of years since I had mine apart. There used to be some excellent photos on here of the whole procedure.

The cam gear has to have the correct shim installed for gear alignment. Aftermarket cams usually need a diferrent shim. The manual spells out the procedure, assuming things are assembled correctly. Mike

Should be no shim in a gear drive set-up that I know of. You didn't by chance raise a burr that is building up as the gear is drawn onto the shaft? Might have to remove the gear to see. What is the oil pump spacer you are talking about? I love these threads as I'm in the middle of my own gear drive swap.

I will pull it apart this weekend, and post my findings.

Default Good News

For those of you checking out this post, by Crank and Cam Gears were not lining up exactly. I would assume I was .025 off or so. Maybe 3 or 4 sheets of paper thickness off.

I could not get them to be 100% perfect. That was the goal. I contacted S&S directly, and they said that if my cam plate was installed correctly, then when the gear set screws are torqued properly, they were good.

They said they did not have to match up absolutely correctly, but should be very close. Sounded like crap to me. I asked them about installing a shim behind my crank gear to make them fully match, and they said no, it was not necessary. I actually finished my build today and it runs and sounds great. You can hardly notice any new or addition gear whine or noise.

Default Response to TGaetto

TGaetto, I will have to say the bike feels like it is a breathin' dragon compared to stock. It is so incredibly fun drive after all the upgrades. Anywhere from 60-90 is hilariously fun.

When it get close to 3000 rpm, I seem to hit a sort of power band. The kick just pulls like I never would have figured. Not sure if this is attributed the cam or what. I did the 95in kit, cams, V&H 2:1, had the heads done. Now ai am running the TMax with autotune, so that is just basic tuning. i al meeting with my indy, and will get some basics from him on fine-tuning this 95".

All in all, I sure am satisfied. Pulls great in all ranges, but pulls like a bastard near 3000. I am getting my VPC clutch this weekend, so things will only get better.

Folks, I do computers for a living. I did this work with a $89 set of ChannelLock tools, and borrow torque wrench. If you enjoy twisting the throttel every now and again, do some research, and do the work your self (except the heads and cylinder bore).

Even if it blows up tomorrow, at least I know I had a blast now. No whines or ticking by the way...
