I pulled the cable out and it is in one piece. Even at the slow pace I can push at the cable rotates smoothly. I'm going to get a new unit from my dealer rather than try to fix it.
Thank you all for the comments.

I wonder what goes on with these things, mine started going from 50 to 80 back and forth, gave it some good slaps and has worked fine since. At around 30 k miles. now at 50.

Mine's an '89, also mounted on the left. When the drive unit went last fall I replaced the cable as well just to be on the safe side.

Pull cable off drive unit, leave hooked to speedo. Hook up drill motor to loose end. Will tell you if cable or speedo is bad. Can't remember if it's forward or reverse, though.

Good luck finding an OEM drive unit. They’ve been out of production for many years and are more scarce than rocking horse poop.

I had one but let I go with my wrecked Evo when I sold the remains.

Not a good idea. This can be diagnosed quickly without risking the cable or speedo. Yah, I know, someone's cousin's boyfriend did it and it was cool. Too many rpms.

Actually, I did it to diagnose my drive. Ran it slow, no problem. Told me what I needed to know.
