Default Help!!! Radial caliper upgrade issue

Good evening,

I have a 1990 fxr with a narrow glide 39mm front end that I am trying to mount an 04 gsxr tokico caliper on. I have a new twin power 11.8 rotor and a speed merchant Left side radial bracket. My problem is, the caliper does not clear the wheel. I have a 9 spoke cast wheel and even followed the instructions. I verified the part number for the mount and it is supposed to be right for this setup but I don’t see any way to make this work. I am on,what was supposed To be the home stretch of re-assembly so I was hoping that someone else has run into this problem and some fresh perspective is needed. Thanks

First things first. Did you get the adapter bracket for 13 inch rotors or 11.5 inch rotors? What model brake caliper do you have? Are you shimming the caliper the approximate .150

You need to post pictures because our text doesn't explain enough for me to help you

Thanks for the response. The adapter is for 11.5 rotor and the caliper is what was recommended. FabKevin told me it will not work without a 13 spoke wheel. I will be going a different route now.

Why do you have the caliper bracket spaced so far inboard? The .150 thousandth spacers go under the caliper to the bracket to help with pad sweep.

loose those spacers and possibly space the rotor out if you need it

mid you need you can machine down or clearance the spikes as well

Ok Thanks, I will take a look at those options. The wheel is centered and the bracket was shimmer to a starting point to center the caliper. I didn’t want to space the rotor out because of the speedo drive engagement.

Because the 99-earlier Tapered bearing wheels are Even Narrower than the 2000-later narrow-glide wheels

you’re not picking up what I am putting down here.....

the issue is the caliper to the wheel. If the bracket is not spaced in then you might have the room for it. Then your bring the rotor to the caliper

Actually, I am ... calipers, sliders, rotors, spacers are not lost on me

I was just mentioning a nuance that most people don't know and figures in when doing any wheel mods and contributed to this issue ... illustrated by the washers/spacers shown in the photos

Take a 13-spoke wheel for example (because they were made both ways, whereas a 9-spoke is only "Early") ... a 99 Hub is narrower than a 2000 hub by almost 3/8" ... but still looks like the same wheel to most (except for the bearings which should be obvious)

Also in regards to bringing a rotor to the Caliper ... for this example forget about about keeping his Speedo drive in play (which can be dealt with) ...

You would need an approx .175" rotor spacer to use a 99-ealier wheel in 2000-later sliders/calipers. That's the same approx height as the hub's locating "spigot" so you would lose that because a rotor spacer can't be machined at .175 and still retain that provision.

To make this easier, without any spacing on the bracket, the caliper will still hit.
