So, the last time I had my clutch and compensator pulled, I noticed considerable wobble on my starter shaft. Want to pull the starter and replace that bushing on the inner case.
.
. Anything else to check while the starter is pulled? Lotta work for a $5 part. Ken

Was your starter giving you any issues? Some stuff you do is preventative, and the inner bushing isn't really one of those parts that people have issue with normally. Again, don't know your bikes particular condition. This is one of those times where....don't fix it, if it ain't broke.

I have lately had an occassional loud "crunch" sound when starting. Bike is a 98 Ultra in good condition with 49k miles. I think the looseness of the starter shaft is enough to cause it to jump a gear tooth. The 98 does not have the opposing support bushing in the outer primary case.

I think in your case, changing the inner primary bushing is a positive thing to eliminate one variable causing the "crunch", and would be easy since you already have it off. Hope it fixes your problem.

It does have a bushing in the outer cover.

The loud crunch you are hearing is probably the starter clutch asking to be replaced.

I've also heard that "crunch noise" when a battery is getting lazy or connections are loose or dirty. If that's all good, carefully check the starter gear for chipped teeth and do the bushing.

You are correct, Dan. One of many senior moments. Put calipers on shaft and outer bushing and it's a tight fit.

. Gonna put it back together and just ride it . Thanks again, guys. Ken
