Default 1985 softail neutral switch

Can anyone give me directions to remove the neutral switch. I got the bike and neutral does not light up so I’m guessing that’s the problem. It sits right on top of the tranny I just can’t get at it. Thank you

Troubleshooting by guessing....Stop.

Disconnect the wire from the switch and touch it to ground, the neutral light should come on.

If it comes on, the switch is probably the problem.

If the light does not come on, the switch is not the problem.

The light did not come on when grounded to the frame so It looks like I have a wiring problem. I can’t say I’m surprised because whoever owned the bike before me added a custom dash.

Yeah I'd be willing to bet your problem is there instead of the switch.

is there a way to tell if there is power to the light? I’m wondering if the bulb just went bad.

also does anyone know how to remove the light it has a clip on it I can’t figure out how to get it off

You need a voltmeter.
You can get a multimeter pretty cheap, around 10-15 bucks or so, it will measure volts, ohms, amps...

A multimeter and a shop manual are invaluable tools when you own an old bike.

I`m thinking we are seeing some non oem wire connections in that pic...

Lol I think you’re right. So I ordered a multimeter last night I will be going to pick it up today. I need a good service Manuel I just don’t know what year the bike is. On the title it says 1997 softail custom but I think it is older. Or maybe just the engine is older. Can anyone tell by looking at it? The guy I bought it from had it sitting for years and didn’t know anything about it
