Good luck Yell if you need help we will try around here. Take your time. Wires do not always run where it looks like they do so make sure you are tracing the right wire.

I'm pretty sure your heritage classic has the same wiring as my '98 Fatboy. I believe the orange and white wire that comes off of your accessory circuit breaker is where your culprit is because the O/W wire sends power to all the turn signal light, stop light, turn signal switches, turn signal module and speedometer. There is definitely a short somewhere in that wire to ground causing the breaker to trip.. I would have to say it's definitely not in the speed sensor because the speed sensor is just a set of contacts that the speedometer reads to determine speed..

I had a similar issue once where the dual element bulb in the rear brake light, one of the filaments broke and shorted the power side of the filament to ground causing the breaker to trip and reset and trip and reset... Hope this helps..

Yeah i think they are the same wiring --funny you mention that because i noticed my blinkers light up but don't flash.
i will check those wires on the accessory breaker first.

thanks for the heads up !!!

Speed sensor has 3 wires and one is hot runs up from sensor all the way to plug under tank and on to ignition . easy to trace and eliminate as an issue. Yes every time break trips the speedo will cut out.
I have service manual for 1996 HD softails

Yes the speed sensor has three wires and yes one of them is 12 volts battery power (The red one). Not sure about 96 cuz I don't have a manual for 96 and the OP has a 98 and I have a manual for the 98... It clearly shows speed sensor is fed from the orange and white circuit on the accessories breaker, which in turn comes off of the A terminal of the ignition switch directly off the main 30a breaker..

Not a lot of difference in 1998 and 1996. . 2004 and newer speed sensor runs to ECM first.
Shorts can be a pain to find. First thing I do is look. look for a wire that is rubbing /cut ect. One thing at a time he will likely find the source.
Latter today installing recalibration unit on the 1996 for speedometer
