Default 1992 FXDC question

Hello members,

Two questions, anybody know the history of the 92 FXDC? I was going to repaint this tank I bought from that era bike.

Second question, my OEM tank has a dent which I need to fix, I have some nos decals to put back on it, is there a trick or any pointers after the tank is sprayed black??

Can the painter clear coat right over the decals?? the pic is my tank with a small dent in it (1991 Sturgis)

1992 FXDC "Grey Ghost" e.g. bikes frame in gray and not black was built in limited numbers.
Something like 200 made.
The rest of 1992 model year FXDC had black frames.
Can't tell if your fueltank is from the one or the other since they had the same livery.

No matter color on the frame, they looked good in my opinion.

As for clear coating the fuel tank decals, well I would check with the producer of the decals if they can take it.

Not all clear coats are the same.
Some are more aggresive than others.

You can also check with a trustworthy paintshop if they can advice You.

I my self had to repaint a tank severall times.
First type of clear coat reacted with the color coats.

Second time around the second type of clear coat and base coat was ok, but that clear coat did not like fuel...

Third time the new clear coat ruined the decals.

Fourth time it all came together.

I would not repaint either of them.. I would try to look for somebody to take the dent out of the Sturgis tank.. There's ways of doing it without messing with the finish.. I saw some videos I believe on YouTube on how they do it.. They actually tap it with the plastic mallet and punch and it drives it right out... Both those tanks are collectibles.....

Paintless dent removal...By All Means...Only Original...Once...Period.
My Body Guy has a person come in like once a Month just for the Pulling dents without hurting the Paint!!
I had him do More than One...after He pulled a pretty bad dent right at the "point" of my '82 FXRS Tank.
Expensive? You Bet, Worth it??? Abso friggin lutely!!

I agree with others, that dent can be fixed by a paintless dent repair company. Just make sure they have a history/experience with motorcycle tanks. It does look like you have a scratch in the clear coat also? The vid below tells how to do it. Not saying you should do the scratch repair, just showing that it can be done with some pretty impressive results. YMMV
