Default Mainshaft seal and O ring.

I’ve got a question about the o ring and seal on the main shaft.

The bike:
1988 FXRS with stock transmission.

The transmission gear set:
2005 FLH stock 5 speed

I’m in the middle of installing the 05 transmission. What seal should I use? The one made the FXR or the one from 05 transmission?

from what I’ve gathered the newer seal is slightly larger.

Think you have other issues than the seal to deal with, don't think the 05 stuff is a drop in for that early a case.

It fits. It’s currently in the case.

Use the main shaft seal and quad o ring for the 05, the outside diameter of the main shaft seal should be the same measure to confirm, so the difference would have to be inside diameter

Also use the 2005 pulley spacer, big seal for the spacer, and a new pulley. Without looking it up, pretty sure the wedding band seal is the same.

Its early in the morning, now I think about it, test fit your spacer, it should slide right on your main shaft, if so use the early seal and quad o ring, put your early quad o ring on main shaft fallowed by early main shaft seal and then your original spacer chamfered edge in, I know the outside diameter of the two seals are the same the difference is in the spacer

If that doesn't work you may have to do what Yankee Dog says and use the later style spacer, I forgot they changed spacer in late 94

The later style spacer/pulley is the better set up. More spline contact. The pre 94's had a tendency to loosen up. Also better locking system for the pulley nut on the later style sprocket.

Your exactly right Yankee Dog, the later style is better, would not strip the splines in the sprocket as easily
