Default help! no vent! 4 speed

I've got an 85 softail 4speed and I cant find any vent on the trans The auto oiler and vent from engine to primary is no longer on this bike. I was told that one of the bolts on top is supposed to be drilled for a vent??. I've got a wedding ring seal that leaks and I think that venting is the problem HELP, and THANKS

I know on the older 4 speeds one of the bolts was drilled for a vent. Not sure about the "Maytag" 4 speeds, though. I looked through my Sloptail manual and couldn't find any reference to the vent.

I'm gonna move this to the Softail section, and also stick something in the Evo section. maybe someone will have some info.

I cannot for the life of me remember where the vent is on a maytag, although I don't think its a vented screw. (that was on the earler four speeds)I,m thinking that it was a nipple and a hose.but..........I have found most of the problems with that seal, is related to ether a worn final drive gear bushing, or the mainshaft, there is not much room for lateral movement on a seal that thin.

there *IS* a vent

it isa hole, not much bigger than a pinhole, in the centre and near the top of the tranny ..on the back (wheel) side

there is a CCI part, I believe, which improves that.... a little breather screw. Tap a hole, and run it in. it comes with a vent hose

good question though... it is not a well-known feature on our trannys!
