Hello, so I test road a 94 softail last night with just under 19k miles. It was about 43 degrees and the bikes been sitting for a few years and hasn't been ridden much. It started really well and after a few mins of choke to warm up a bit It idled well. The engine is bone stock as far as the guy knows. The rear jug seeped just a tiny bit but not even enough to scrape a fingernale with. While taking the test ride it would really struggle to get moving. After it kinda caught its wind it would go well and shift pretty well, just taking off I really had to fiddle the gas a clutch to get it to get going. It never actually stalled but came real close. Ik it was less than ideal circumstances being 43 degrees and only letting it warm up for like 2 mins. My theories are: bad gas, dirty carb, not adjusted properly, some sort of combination of all that plus sitting and cold. Anything else I should consider? He's asking 6500. Needs a back tire bad and a bath even worse. Any thoughts?
Sounds like it needs new gas, spark plugs and a new air filter, maybe carburetor jetting. If you tested at a higher elevation and the bike came from a lower elevation it will need re-jetted for your altitude.
Maybe 20 years ago a friend and I were in Sturgis. His Fatboy was carbureted and my Glide was fuel injected. Both ran perfect in Indiana before we left. At the higher altitudes of ND his Fatboy was acting like the choke was partly on running sluggish.
Maintenance should be able to fix all her current issues, standard for a bike that has been sitting.
But, $6500 for a '94 with issues including needing a tire, and they guy didn't even clean her up for the potential sale? Sounds like a $4500 bike from over here. Good luck.
He's asking too much for a 94, and 1 that's not running right..
Not sure about ND but down here at best that's a $4k bike in it's current condition.
I doubt it needs a re-jet the carb probably just needs a good cleaning.JMO
