Default New sound developed

1998 Ultra

Several months ago....installed new base gaskets and head gasket. It was really quiet afterwards.

This past week....this sound developed. But....somebody might recognize this sound.

When I accelerate ....the noise is there. Back off the throttle even just a little....sound comes back.

Fyi: Bike still runs great.

Any ideas where to start

Check push rod for looseness if you have adjustables. Check lifters.

Lifter or the inner cam bearing. I would not run it until it came apart and was inspected.

Yea....it’s definitely parked until it’s fixed.

The lifters probably have around 60,000 miles....I’ll go ahead and get the OEM factory lifters, unless someone has a better company to go with.

Pushrods are SE adjustables.....engine was very quiet after I did the base base gasket and head gasket in September.

Cam bearing was replaced with the Torrington the same time as the SE pushrods were installed.

The bike does run good.....but does seem to struggle at highway speeds where it use to not. It is down on power and is noticeable 70 mph.

I’ll pull the lifters probably Friday or weekend if I have time.

Then my current GUESS is either a pushrod loosened up or a lifter went out. If the lifters have 60K on them, they are 10K past replacement time anyway.

At 60,000 you got the life out of those lifters. Check the coating on the camshaft too to make sure it is not coming off.

Clarify that - did you mean when you accelerate it quiets down a little, back off and it comes back?

Maybe I'm wrong, but the noise sounds more like the speed of a piston than valve speed.

No noise when accelerating....back off throttle and shift gears, the noise is there. Decelerate....noise.

Was afraid that's what you meant. Again, diagnosing engine sound from a video is a guess at best, especially the way noise travels thru these engines, but it sound's like a rod bearing.
