Picked up a 1999 Fatboy yesterday. Had all the service records up to date. Cosmetically it has some surface rust, chrome bad in a couple spots. Tearing down to clean and replace gaskets and such. Made the 2 hour drive home yesterday. No issues.
Nice! That’s how I started out with mine. Had a rebuilt 98 motor that heads were reworked, performance cam, Mikuni 42 carb. Fenders rusted out, custom painted tins I found for only $500, sold the old ones for $350. FatBoy wheels were corroded, replaced with 80 spoke wheels. This and that. Was fun doing the project.
What you see is where most of the issues were. Painting black tomorrow. Primary cover, horn, coil cover, transmission side and top cover, swing arm bolt covers, swing arm inserts, oil tank, all coming in black this week. Putting black floorboards from new bike on it, (upgrading new bike), custom fitted new touring brake pedal on, I tried to wait but I couldn’t.
going new school black with the EVO look and motor. Doing all myself. I appreciate the support to those who will give it. This bike has 14000 miles on it. Lot of rust. Blasting and repainting.
main thing is my 8 and 10 year old get to wrench and I don’t care. I’m nostalgic, money to buy new one but chose this EVO, piece of history. looking forward to the convos and the negative “oh you shouldn’t have bought that POS” comments.

I'm curious. Any idea why so rusty? I bought my 1999 Fatboy 2 years ago, and I live in the Pittsburgh area. The guy that had it before me beat it and really didn't take care of it, but there was hardly any rust on it. I would think a southern bike would have even less.

Other than that, I like! Good choice.
Bike was purchased and lived In Corpus Christi, TX. A town right on the coast, literally. story is the guy that owned it had more money than sense, kept up with maintenance but apparently didn’t wipe it down ever lol.
