FLSTC 1988 Bendix replacement issue - Type II Starter drive
Hi guys, I have a FLSTC 1988 belt drive (type II Starter drive in user manual). I'm trying to replace the bendix here. I removed the #18 left hand thread nut but I can't remove the #15 pinion shaft collar.
It moves on the #19a shaft from about 0.5" but doesn't want to come out of the shaft. I tried to unscrew it (left and right) and it doesn't move further. I tried to pry it a bit and nothing either.
Would you guys be able to tell me what I should do with it?
Push 15 back on and give us another picture. Doesn't the starter need to come out to finish job? Unless you take off clutch hub?
That bendix is technically a sprag one way lock up clutch. Once motor starts, it outruns gear spinning it the other direction about a 3/8 turn.
The roller pins in it run down ramps dropping down unlocking . Keeps the armature from flying apart. Nothing slips or wears in it. Guess at yours age, it could be dried up grease keep springs from pushing drive rollers in place.

I wonder if there is thread inside #15 and that the initial part of the thread might be worn out. It moves very smoothly on the shaft until it stop firmly.

The ring gear is clear from #15. The only part that would hit the ring gear is the bendix clutch housing (see picture attached). For that I guess I would need to remove the entire assembly (starter and the rest...) to take off the bendix. But in any cases, the part #15 should come out from this side of the shaft according to user manual.
But to get the starter clutch off your going to have to remove the primary, and to do that you have to also remove the engine compensator and primary chain at the same time

The collar has to come off. Use a small 2-jaw puller.
The bendix comes off the shaft from the nut/collar end and the simple way to do it is remove the clutch hub/shell assembly.
You'll have to remove the plug on top of the primary , swivel pin and fork regardless. If you pull the shaft out too far, have to remove the starter and gear reduction housing to get it back in.
