Spring out for wet primary, spring in for dry primary. Been that way since the 60's for HD Big Twin main bearing seal. Just sayin' ...
Don't sweat it 0maha. You put a new seal against a (how many thousand miles?) rotating surface. Looks like you didn't polish the old spacer either. (?) The chances of getting it seated precisely where the new would contact the old (wear line) well enough to seal... well that's a bad bet. Just a live a learn thing.
Don't the make a double lip seal for that? Thought I remembered seeing one advertised or mentioned once.
"They" advertise a double lip seal for the inner primary bearing but I can't tell the difference from the pictures. On aftermarket sites they list the replacement for an OEM 12052 as double lip and the current MoCo IPB seal 12052A as single. (?)
But the main bearing seal is a typical National brand seal with a spring pressure lip one side and a simple dust lip on the other side. I've got one somewhere, lemme check again, I may have misspoken... again
I was trying to send you a PM with an interesting thread from another forum.
I knew posting a link to another forum was frowned on but I guess even in a PM it is to.
Everything went back together without any trouble or surprises.
Just got back from a drizzley 100 mile shake down run. So far, so good. But then again, it was running well before, so why wouldn't it?
Whatever was going on with the clutch seems to have self-corrected, which is nice. I did pull the clutch pack out the other night, and it all looked brand new.
From here, my plan is to get her to a total of 500 miles post-assembly, drain and measure the primary, and see where things are at.
I really hope this is sorted. The bike is running so sweet! Just love it! It would really be a shame to have to tear her all apart.
I always put 1.5 in the short primary like yours, but to each ones own.
If you haven't already, DO change the engine oil... it sucked a bunch of primary sludge in there, complete with fiber dust from the clutch breaking in.
