The one in your pic appears to have made a good start by sitting out in the rain for a good year with the electrics exposed and gas tap on before the serious basketing begins. Extra points if the plugs and oil filler cap are missing.
Slightly used 109K maybe 209K is not slightly used, and It wasn't sitting in the rain. He washed it off with a hose, and although it was not in boxes....it was still a basket case. Where it went to.................

What you describe in a parts stash.

Looking forward to the pix.

No. To qualify as a parts stash, there must be at least 6 carburettors, all either missing the float or the jets or with a busted floatbowl casting, plus at least 6 magnetos, none of which spark, three transmissions with four speeds between them all, 10 dented gas tanks, a box of cracked headlight lenses, 25 totally flogged out pistons with rings stuck in grooves, two pairs of con-rods coloured all blue around the bottom half, two dozen used spark plugs all carboned up or burnt beyond recognition, and about 10,000 metal brackets whose original purpose is known to nobody on the planet. Usually advertized as "all came off good running bikes".
And 209,000 miles? An Evo is only just run in at that.

For clarification, is this simply to hold the plate, or does this also include insurance, etc? Trying to understand the thought process above the border, not pickin' or anything. Down here, we have plate fees, and insurance, which adds up. Just wondering if we look at what all is covered, we may find things done differently, but very similar in effect. Can you clarify?

This province has a government run insurance, where the plate registration and insurance are rolled into a single entity. The other provinces are separate, pay your registration then shop around for the best insurance rate.

Glad both myself and bike are old

12 months of full coverage insurance and plates = $230 USD

Correct, not like that here in the province to the west of you. License plate yearly renewal around here is $70 per bike and about $90 per car/truck. I pay about $500/yr insurance on my 1999 FLSTS for basic coverage, and about $800/yr each for the other two. Lets not talk about the insurance on the Ram 1500 after all the hail claims (province-wide) over the last couple of years

I was hoping to get a couple of more weeks of riding in before the snow starts to fly around here.... Something I forgot to mention in the list of issues this "roadworthy" (lol) bike has, is the seeping front base gasket, which I was hoping to address over the winter. What I thought was a leaky header gasket as well, is actually a blown head gasket on the rear cylinder. Time for an immediate tear down! I was pleasantly surprised to find adjustable push rods and what looks like aftermarket pistons, as they have a black coating on the skirts, so the engine might have been freshened up at one time. Luckily, there's no scoring on the head or cylinder gasket surfaces. I've already installed the Barnett CF clutch and heavy duty diaphragm, so much better now. Apparently, when the PO had the primary rebuilt, they didn't install the clutch pack properly, and left out one of the steels. No wonder I couldn't get the diaphragm adjusted to spec! I am going to inspect the lifters and the cam bearings while I have it apart as well, and install the braided steel front brake lines and auto turn signal module while she's off the road. My gasket kit and shifter shaft should be here in a few days. Any way, here's some pics from Sunday...

Edit: Forgot to mention I picked up a (puts on flame retardant suit) knockoff carb for it as well, and was actually pretty impressed with the overall finish of it. I tore it down and installed the Harley parts from my original though. People looking to get $300 for a used CV carb around here! NUTS! I can get an HSR42 for just over $400, which will be ordered for spring installation.

Yup... But... Buying a Sorry Motorcycle, then Tearing it apart is Not Buying a Basket Case..That is Creating a Basket case... it is What you do with it that Determines your "Status"
But... Saving a "Sad Case" is sometimes More rewarding!!!

Basket case was probably a harsh term to use.. I was more P/O'd than anything I guess, with the fact that "All the major stuff was done", when in fact hardly anything was actually done to keep the bike kept up to a ride-able condition, other than short trips around the neighbourhood. She's getting lots of love and care now though. I'm not letting it taint my first Harley experience!
