Hey guys I have a 1992 harley davidson softail heritage classic. 27000 miles on it ran great the other day our of the blue when it gets warmed up the idle goes high and it over heats real quick because of it . But no problem just out of the blue . I have sprayed around the intakes to see maybe a vacuum leak there but nothing. It's a regular cv carb . I personally have never messed with them .
It’s 30 years old, I wouldn’t mess with rebuilding it when a S&S is infinitely better
Seriously, you are advising the OP to spend over 600 dollars on a new carburetor (which is certainly not infinitely better), instead rebuilding a CV carb (a rebuild kit is about 20 bucks).
Again, ridiculous.
The OP can decide who is giving the best advice here.
The CV carb is as dependable as any carburetor out there.
dont think they are junk, by any means, but not user friendly or have the built in adjustability a E has.

CVs are great carbs, sometimes intake manifold vacuum leaks are hard to detect, sometimes you just have to take apart and inspect, the enricher "choke" plunger maybe wore out, check vacuum hose to voes switch and voes switch itself for vacuum leaks, if you have one on your bike

By design the CV is a great carburetor because it can compensate for altitude better than a simple butterfly carburetor such as the S&S. The S&S is simpler to work on, but as far as performance goes, a CV can easily feed a 100 horsepower EVO engine.
I got to go with put a kit in it and seal the intake like mentioned above. CV is a real good carb and easy to work on.
Make sure you check for ignition melt before you dig in. Very common with evo’s.
