We’ll crack my knuckles and jump for joy, I got a clean bill of health from Doctor McCoy…

Just popped it in, slipped the (new) fuel line on, plugged in the vacuum line, throttle cables and pulled the choke and boom, started right up and idles like a champ. Warmed up a bit and a few throttle blips after pushing in the choke and she purred. Not a drop out the overflow.

Something must have been seriously wrong with the other (spare) carb because all I did here was replace the float valve and set the level exactly as I did the spare one I rebuilt. Who knows. I never saw fuel flow out the 4th hole on the air cleaner flange before.

Anyway, it could be I just had bad luck with that spare carb and all my previously good running one needed was a new float valve, so that’s what I’m going to run with.

going to button it up and go for a ride to make sure all is well.

I appreciate all the expertise offered. And now that there’s no Dynojet parts in there I guess I can come back next time?

Thank all!

Good job! Yes you're always welcome here despite my (or anyone else's) rants

If you had fuel out the bowl vent, yeah, you had a serious bad problem - the valve wasn't closing at all. If only out the overflow, could have been a lesser problem like float level or poor seal at the needle. Glad to you got it sorted and thanks for the update.

Ahhh, I was wondering how fuel could come out of that. Now that you’ve explained what that vent is it makes perfect sense. Someone here previously warned me about the James Gasket rebuild kit, particularly the float valve. I was expecting maybe a higher rate of problems called for that comment, however I wasn’t expecting it to be THAT prevalent! The HD valve was $24 from my dealer, and miraculously they had one in stock. Good luck there for a change.

I’m going to disassemble the spare carb and see if I missed something in the bowl. Or it could be why it was on eBay…

Again, thanks for the help!

Forgot to mention I went for a spin and she runs perfectly. Off idle is crisp, pulls solidly all the way to 5000 with no flat spots. I didn’t get to redline due to the roads I took but as good as it feels I’m sure it’ll be fine. I’ll get out tomorrow if the weather permits. Supposed to rain maybe…

At this point I just want to repair the overflow as it ran great prior. I went to HD and bought a float valve and a bowl o-ring and installed them. Set the bowl level to 10.9mm and am about to install it back and try it out. I’ll report back in 10 min.
Curious about the float valve or should I say the needle, was needle and seat all Brass?

Ouch! Didn't realize OEM had gotten that high but at least that's peace of mind. Like I said, I seldom, almost never replace the originals, just inspect the spring, clean the tip and inspect with a magnifying glass. Just threw away an old coffee cup full of new ones out of aftermarket kits a while back.

Reason I asked about your petcock - You've had this issue with 2 different carbs (though one is an unknown condition) and was pondering if maybe the petcock had been changed and/or someone removed the screen letting tank debris thru. That, or a flaking fuel line are the only places you would get enough debris to hang a float/valve open enough to get fuel out the bowl vent unless something was totally wrong with the float. Fuel should have run out the overflow tube before it got all the way up to the bowl vent. Maybe it did and you didn't notice since it was coming so fast.

Thought I should mention all that just in case it did it again, you'll know to look at the petcock screen since you've replaced the hose already. Even with a vacuum petcock, best to be in the habit of manually shutting them off when parked for a while. Those vacuum diaphragms can fail and let fuel thru otherwise. Have a friend who inherited a TC Fatboy that sat for 5+ years with the (vacuum) petcock left on. The bowl on that one did not have the drain/overflow and it filled the crank case with sour fuel. He had a helluva time with that one...

Good to hear you're up and running

It was the same 4 sided aluminium base and synthetic rubber pointed tip we all know. And the seat is inside the carb, made of brass and i haven't ever seen a replacement? Unless you are referring to another part?

Still stock petcock. I was looking at a Pingel vacuum petcock but two bills is a little steep for that. When it was leaking out the vent, it was coming out the overflow as well.

Just for laughs because I feel like the vacuum petcock isn’t shutting down fuel flow anymore, I ordered a replacement - Newcastle HD astonishingly had one, it’s filter, gasket and nut in stock. I know many replace them with manual pingle’s or other brands, but I really like the auto-shut off in case I forget to flip the valve. I had one without issue on my previous FXR for years. Should be here Friday. NCHD ships same day and I usually get in two days. But I’m sure USPS will delay it due to the Christmas rush…
