i have a question about replacing the cam on my 96 roadking.Im installing an Andrews ev27 cam.Ive replaced the cam bearing and will be replacing the lifters as well.I have measured the end play and installed a 60 thou shim to give me 13 thou play. What im finding now is that the face of the cam gear dosnt sit flush with the pinion and breather gear. The cam gear sits forward of the pinion and breather by 50 thou or so which means the gwars dont mesh 100%.Just wondering if this is normal.
Are u sure the bearing is all the way in? You may want to measure the depth of where its at now, pull it out and take measurements.Just my thoughts.
Also, if you put the cover on w/o the gasket, does it sit flush? Like its sitting deep enough.

Pretty sure i have the bearing in deep enough.I felt it bottom out in the case when i installed it.It sits just below the edge of the hole.i will re look at it though. Its comming apart again today so i can have another look. All 3 gears sit flush without the shim in place.but without the shim i have too much end play (70 thou or so). When i shim it to specs it brings it forward.by the way my dealership says its ok like it is because of the rounded edges on the new cam gear.It just isnt sitting right with me.I just want to get it right.
Between the thrust washer and the shoulder of the cam with the cover and gasket on and torqued. It is my first cam install.pretty sure i measured endplay correctly.I ended up with 13 thou.i pulled the nose cone off this morning for another look.It isnt off as much as i thought but laying a straight edge accross the face of the cam gear with the cam gear pushed in tight against the shim i can measure about 20 thou between the face of the cam gear and the face of the pinion gear.I did replace the pinion gear during this project and it is on properly and torqued.Maybe im overthinkig this?
Im using the gear that came with the cam.I have read lots of posts from guys that swaped gears.I inquired at my dealer and they didnt have the equipment nor do they ever do it that way.So i ended up replacing the pinion. They dealer did measurements for that.I ended up going with a green pinion gear.I had a yellow one originally and it was too tight.
I think you're overthinking it.. The cam end play tolerance is .001"-.050".. if your set on keeping the gears flush then reduce the cam shim. 020".. it was common to have .030"-.035" with the stock cam...
Thanks for your input. I'll not sure if I'll change the shim or just leave as is.that is a huge tolerance isnt it.I hear what your saying.A narrower shim will allow the gears to sit flush but more end play.I was just going by andrews specs of .010 to .015.
