Default Belt has a wear mark.

Just going over the old girl to get ready for the season and noticed something strange. 1993 flhtc. Drive belt has had something rubbing in the middle. Cut into the belt a couple mm. Nothing obvious but haven't had the primary off. Any ideas?
I checked all the areas I can get at without removing the primary. It's been in a garage all winter and moved around a few times while working on it but only noticed this yesterday.

That looks to go all the way around.
When you roll the wheel can you hear or feel something rubbing the beltFirst thought was a backed out bolt but can t think of a specific one that would do that.
Do ck that out tho

Yes, it does go all the way around. I had it on a jack and can easily spin the wheel forward or backward. The only sound is the brake pads on rotor. Other people have suggested that I may have picked up a rock which has now fallen out.

Think if you are planning on doing some serious traveling, then you are pushing the e-ticket ride button if you do not change out the belt.

Sux...that sounds like your best explanation. Got stuck in the front pulley/sprocket area and did it's damage then eventually came out. Could have been anything from a rock to piece of junk/road debris.

Easy solve, and when the rear wheel was removed and reinstalled, someone did not pull down on the belt guard debries side flap, and its now push up in a Z shape above the belt with it center riding on the center of the belt to cause the grooving.

My be able to loose the wheel so you can pull the deflector flap down, but depending on how long is been like that/if you can get it relax again, may need to replace it instead.

As for belt, up to you, but would plan on replacing it in the near future. Belt will be about $250 (go HD oem), and will need to replace the primary cover gasket, and the primary large O ring behind the primary at comp location (primary case to engine).

As for the primary bolts, Just reuse them, with some RTV on the threads and just under the washers to seal the off.
Note, on the newer motors, primary bolts have washer with rubber seal on them that you replace, while no such beast on the older Evo's (just sealer on the threads).

Dano523, if you are referring to the flap in the inside of the belt guard, I am not sure anyone could have got the rear wheel on with the belt guard interferring the way you describe.

Way I look at it, either problems in the belt guards, or had/has a large enough piece of debries trapped up front on top of the front pulley to primary, to cause it to groove the belt .

So either way, need to pull the guards to check them out if something is protruding on them, as well as check for debris stick between the primary case and front belt pulley.

Place good tape on the top of the belt run it around a bit see if it marks it again.
