Other day I was riding my 97 WG to work and the engine noise at the top of the engine seemed a bit louder than "normal". Next morning I checked the engine oil and noticed it was a bit low and added a bit, which appeared to quiet it a little bit. I'm still a little bit low of the cold level mark, but also cognizant of it spitting oil through the breather if filled up completely.
A couple of months ago I replaced the base, head and rocker gaskets on the front cylinder myself after peeps suggestions on here. Early June I did an approximately 250 round trip and the bike ran great - 52mpg there (mostly state highway) and 48mpg on the way back due to getting on the interstate and running up to 90 and then some traffic jams. Providing this as background info.
Looking for suggestions if I need to look at something (e.g. adjustable pushrods need adjusting) or am I being a bit paranoid?
Without hearing it in person I'd bet it's just a noise.
These EVO's have their on character and noises that are a part of their soul.
Mine near always had a bit different noise's after a long hwy run.
Never let me down just made me think on occasion

I agree, some days smooth and mellow, other days it lets you know it's there...
A good thing is that you notice if there's a difference in the sound of your engine from "normal." If you have adjustable PRs, I would just check them again. How many miles on the bike? As a future note, you should always do both cylinders while you are in there, but I'm sure you had your reasons. Believe me, sometimes I try to do the minimum fix as possible.

Miles are in the 50K - 60K range, don't remember off hand, and I've changed the speedo and the shop didn't include the previous reading on the new one.
As a car mechanic all of my life, I had a tick in my Wide Glide that drove me nuts.. Long story short I found "Rocker Lockers" and solved it. Put them in my bagger when I built it too.. Ultimately, my noise was the rocker shaft moving in the box, contacting the hold down bolt and ticking. Sounded like it could be coming from every conceivable valvetrain component. I replaced them all and installer roller rockers before finding these little brass bushings to keep the shaft stationary..
Have a look around my website, original PATENTED Rockout rocker shaft inserts have cured thousands of problems like yours
