That teflon looking stuff is (was) a thrust washer of sorts. It does no sealing, only acts as a solid lubricant between the outer plate and the lever/valve.

Mine did that 20+ years ago. Pulled most of it out and honestly cannot remember whether I ever removed the plate. Lever got stiff at times but after a few weeks and a few drops of 3-in-1 Oil it's been working fine ever since - smooth to operate and no leaks.

If yours is working, snip off what's showing and run it.

I am curious to see a 'junk' review for a Pingel and what the problems are. I design and machine and I've always thought Pingels look and feel like little metal jewels. Hopefully their quality hasn't slipped in later years.

I have no idea on the price since the last one I bought was over 5 years ago. 200 bucks for a valve is silly expensive. The price for anything these days is depressing.

The only problem I've had was when I pumped some bad gas from a podunk station that put silt in my tank. Made my valve feel gritty, still didn't leak. I flushed my tank and replaced the valve. If I can find it I should get around to sending it off for a rebuild. I could resell it and retire.

There is a Chinese knockoff of the Pingle out there. Maybe the "bad" reviewer had one of those, or worked for a competing petcock company. No one here that runs one has ever complained.

My factory one crapped out a couple of years ago. I had just headed out to ride and the bike started sputtering, then died. I had plenty of gas, and realized that it would only run on Reserve.

I replaced it with this one from J&P:

I went to my order history to see what it is exactly, but all it says is, "Chrome Petcock W 90 Deg Barb." It was $19.99 and here's their stock photo:

So far it's worked just fine.

I was very happy with the Pingel I put on my Shovelhead, I'm looking at replacing the PIMA stock petcock for my Evo. Just got done browsing the Golan and watched the video on thier site. Going to try the Golan once I refurbish my bank account.

Pingel is to J&P (Custom Chrome / Drag Specialties / Tucker Rocky et al,) what Cadillac is to Chevy. They both get you down the road and for $20 vs $100, I went with Chevy.
