The last year of the tapered shaft was 1989, belt drive final and diaphragm spring wet clutch.

It is not the same mainshaft that was used with the dry type clutch used on Shovelheads and early 5 speed evos.

So in other words i could use a shovelhead 5 speed with the tapered main shaft and the whole shovelhead drive train on a 1984 evo.

Absolutely... In Fact in 1984 there was "early" and "late" designations... the Clutch was the difference...even on the old 4-speed... poor thing!!!!

Well that's quite something how you could get that done so easily.

So if buying a 1984 evo with the intentions of using a shovelhead 5 speed you want to make sure it was of the wet clutch type with tapered shaft and it would be called a early designation type?

I didn't have much luck in finding parts manuals.

Early 84= Dry clutch (the old shovelhead type), chain drive.

Late 84= Wet clutch, diaphragm spring type, belt drive.

Well that spells it out real well Dan.I'll just simply look for an early 1984 evo with a factory shovelhead type clutch in it.Where does one find this early and late designation that's talked about here?
